4 days 3 nights trip to Penang with bf. We took Air Asia flight, totaled about RM320 for 2 pax inclusive of 1 nasi lemak and 1pc 15kg checked in luggage in return flight

First up, we had our breakfast in KLIA2 Green Market. Above is menu for free meals offered for certain credit card.

2016NovPenang_2

2016NovPenang_5

Our hotel in Penang – M Hotel penang in 19-21, Jalan Rangoon, quite new hotel, i think open last year, so their decor etc are quite modern and still new. We got a single + double bed room with window for only RM379 for 3 nights all tax inclusive, cheaper than the walk-in rate above

2016NovPenang_6

Reasonably big room with flat screen TV, the TV program is very limited though, no english movies, just about 7 channels malay/hokkien/mandarin TV series/news channel

2016NovPenang_7

2016NovPenang_8

toilet, very clean and looks new

2016NovPenang_9

2016NovPenang_10

Joez coconut jelly and coconut shake, the jelly is nice, but the coconut shake tasted very vanila ice cream without taste of coconut

2016NovPenang_11

coconut water

2016NovPenang_12

open 8am – 7pm daily

2016NovPenang_13

Dinner time. This is a MUST EAT – Presgrave Lane 888 Hokkien Mee – or we KL call it prawn mee, added pork rib, roast pork and pork intestine, RM9 for above, sooo good, especially the roast pork with crunchy crackling. YUM

888 Hokkien Mee

67, Lebuh Presgrave

2016NovPenang_14

Thereafter walk to Kimberly street for more famous eats:

2016NovPenang_16

famous kuey chap stall

2016NovPenang_17

2016NovPenang_18

opposite are char kuey tiaw in front of Sin Guat Keong coffee shop and the very-nice-four-fruit-dessert-drink, direct translation from chinese

2016NovPenang_20

kuey chap, broth tasted like bak kut teh which is okay, i like the unique noodle though, not bad

2016NovPenang_21

soft, nice chicken feet

2016NovPenang_22

2016NovPenang_23

char kuey tiaw is so so only

2016NovPenang_24

2016NovPenang_34

went to FHP – Food Hotel Penang near Straits Quay convention centre, so disappointing, the exhibition is really small and nothing much to see, there is a private yahct area behind straits quay, there is really a waterfront vibe here, similar to overseas’, relaxing place with spacious restaurants, too bad the weather is too hot

2016NovPenang_35

another view of yachts

2016NovPenang_36

2016NovPenang_37

Since it is too hot outside, we went inside to restaurants along straits quay and had a lazy afternoon having some munch in Real Food restaurant, a vegetarian restaurant, above is mushroom soup, tasted a bit weird when served without cream. Refer to other blog post: Ken Hunts Food, they also have a branch in One Mont Kiara mall.

2016NovPenang_38

the breakfast set is quite nice, dipping the crunchy hard bread into the really nice egg yolk, the baked bean has a weird gummy texture though, all for the name for vegan…

Ipoh 2 days 1 night trip

3 days trip to Penang and Ipoh

First stop, dim sum in Foh San, above is yam cake

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping2-Foh-San

Other dim sum, notable is their porridge which is very nice and made with drumstick meat instead of chicken shreds

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping3-TanjungTualang

Second stop, we made a slight detour (in the direction of KL) to go to Tanjung Tualang for their famous steam fresh water prawn

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping4-TanjungTualang

Yew Kei, supposedly restaurant locals prefer among many other restaurant in the area selling the same famous steam prawns

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping5-TanjungTualang

tanks & tanks of prawns

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping6-TanjungTualang-600gm-for-RM42

I think the above is RM40 for 600gm, medium small size, find it is just so so, the taste a bit funny, maybe  they should put more rice wine to cover the strong seafood smell…

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping7-TanjungTualang

Over the deepavali weekend…

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping8-Kuala-Sepetang-Portweld

Next stop, Kedai Makanana Tepi Sungai in Portweld/Kuala Sepetang

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping9-Kuala-Sepetang-Portweld

Big prawn in the restaurant ‘aquarium)

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping10-Kuala-Sepetang-Portweld

Squid tasted a bit fishy especially the roundish one with some soft guts inside, RM12

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping11-Kuala-Sepetang-Portweld

Very fresh prompret, yummy! RM14 for a small one

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping12-Kuala-Sepetang-Portweld

Steamed flower crab, RM18

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping13-Kuala-Sepetang-Portweld

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping14-Gee-Seng

Gee Seng in Bukit Tambun is still the best for seafood

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping15-Gee-Seng

Squid RM7 not as good as remembered, not bad nonetheless

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping16-Gee-Seng

Baked crab with roe, very fresh & yummy and only RM33!

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping17-Gee-Seng

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping18-Paramount-Hotel

Arriving our hotel in Penang – Paramount Hotel, only RM90 nett for twin-sharing room, situated next to the City while at the same time very near to City Centre, parking lot available. Just have to bear with that this is very old colonial style hotel with minimal amenities: no TV & fridge in room, simple toast and jam for breakfast upon request, WIFI is already in the room, but slow and keep on getting disconnected, only one electric socket for charging in the room

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping19-Paramount-Hotel

This hotel housed a famous restaurant called Ocean Green

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping20-Paramount-Hotel

Very old style colonial building, above is their side entrance.

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping21-Paramount-Hotel

Have to go up barefooted to keep the place clean and to preserve the wooden flooring and tiles

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping22-Paramount-Hotel

The wooden stairway way with child guard at the top

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping23-Paramount-Hotel

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping26-Paramount-Hotel

hallway leading to room on both sides

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping27-Paramount-Hotel

Our room, very old, No TV, but nonetheless very clean

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping28-Paramount-Hotel

another view to door without safety lock but old keyhole style

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping29-Paramount-Hotel

Even the speed control for overhead fan is old

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping30-Paramount-Hotel

toilet

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping31-Bangkok-Lane-Mee-Goreng

Breakfast in famous Bangkok Lane mee goreng, this Indian uncle speak perfect Penang style hokkien

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping32-Bangkok-Lane-Mee-Goreng

Piping hot even though it is tapao, packed with dried squid etc, slightly sweet, i would prefer it to be more savoury

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping33-AhLeng-CKT

Second stop: Famous Ah Leng Char Kuey Tiaw in Khoon Hiang kopitiam. They closed on Thursdays and supposedly also days when they can’t source good prawns.

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping34-AhLeng-CKT

We waited around 40 minutes for this, the best CKT out of the 4 we had, they use duck egg which is creamy and added in the last stage of cooking, making it creamy and just cooked with soft texture. Yummy! must try

The above is their CKT special(with mantis prawn) + duck egg priced at RM11 Expensive but really nice

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping35

Hokkien mee (prawn mee) with Vits noodle in the same coffeeshop is ok

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping36-Apom-Guan

Apom Guan is must visit as well, we went there twice, so good every time. It is best to drop by and book the apom and come back an hour later due to long queue.

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping37-Okio

O kio, Mun-Tau-Long in Pengkalan Weld is ok, with lychee inside

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping38-Okio

O-Kio sold from a van

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping39-Kek-Seng

Kek Seng Assam laksa is my favourite, their soup is not too thick and very nice

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping40-Kek-Seng

Ice kacang with home-made durian ice cream is yummy

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping41-Yi-Garden

Yi Garden Coffeeshop located near Lorong Selamat sister CKT

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping42-Yi-Garden

Wanton with prawn+pork mince is quite nice

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping43-Yi-Garden

Venison pan mee is offputting, the strong smell of the venison is just not compatible

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping44-SiamRoadCKT

Siam Road CKT

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping45-SiamRoadCKT

Not bad, although not memorable

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping46-PulauTikus-BeeHooi

Famous Old Green House Hokkien mee(prawn mee)

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping49-Old-Green-House

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping50-Old-Green-House

Old Green house’s Hokkien mee, forgettable, the one in Presgrave is so much better.

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping51-Sun-Yoon-Kee

Sun Voon Kee chicken porridge

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping52-Sun-Yoon-Kee

Very expensive, RM7 for a chicken fish porridge, we intended to order their steamed chicken, but they are sold out at 9pm? only leaving some chicken shreds for porridge. Forgettable!

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping53-De-Tai-Tong

De Tai Tong is a bustling shop at 9pm, we had their har kau and siew mai. They have dim sum being sold at night! A lot of other people order their tai chow noodle dish

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping54-Selama-Lam-Khie

Lam Khie in Selama, Perak

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping55-Selama-Lam-Khie

Wantan mee with their housemade noodle, it is not springy, RM3, forgettable

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping56-Selama-Lam-Khie

blanched vege, RM4

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping57-Selama-Lam-Khie

Braised terapin is forgettable, we wanted another soup style but was told it has to be pre-ordered due to long cooking hour, RM20, forgetable

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping58-Selama-Lam-Khie

Steamed frog, RM25 with strong herbal taste

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping59-Selama-Lam-Khie

Very fresh lompang fish, only RM15, this fish has lots of small bones

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping60-Selama-Lam-Khie

Ipoh-Penang-Taiping61-Taiping-Legend-Inn

4 of us go on a 3 days makan trip from KL -> Penang -> Ipoh -> KL. We left KL on Sunday 3pm and arrived back in KL at 3pm Tuesdays, so technically it is a 48 hours trip 🙂 KL->Penang is about 350km, roughly 4.5 hours drive.

Wanted to go to Funny Mountain, but when we reach there on Sunday 5pmish, it was either closed or already finished selling 🙁 miss having their super nice tau fu far and soya bean drink.

100 photos ahead…

Penang-Ipoh-Trip1-GeeSeng

Gee Seng in Bukit Tambun (30km to Penang). It is located at the very end of a stretch of road in Bukit Tambun, passing by some dimly litted residential houses. We reach there 7:30pm just in time for dinner.

Tried one of their best seller: “Four Heavenly Kings” ie carrot, spinach etc filled with nutty cream cheese fillings. I find their cream cheese fillings have quite a bit of butter in it which makes it taste a bit like buttercream, would prefer the fillings to be less buttery. But if you chill the swissrolls well, the fillings will be firmer and feel less buttery

Choose the ingredients you want and bring it to your own table. Each table has a insert of hotpot in the middle.
vege selection

RM84 for 6 person. 5 types of sauces + 5-in-1 sauce. Not exactly quality food, but it is the atmosphere and piping hot food which make it taste not half-bad. This stall is at Wai Sik Kai of Chai Leng park, it is at the furthest end of the road if you are coming from Pearl View hotel.

Had another impromptu trip to Penang, it is a 1-night-stay, work till the wee hours of the morning, fly back to KL the next day. While waiting for my flight, pondering what to eat. McD? Coffee Bean? Kenny Rogers? Craving for some chicken, some rice, comfort food to be exact. so Kenny it is.
Had the quarter chicken with 3 side dishes RM16.90
Choice of side dishes: i chose mash potato, rice and crisp garden salad.
my choice of banana muffin, complimentary ice water.
The mash potato taste funny, mainly cos of the gravy, it is not the usual dark gravy, instead taste cornish with traces of corn… Yuck… nonetheless i down it all as i love potatoes any style.
