4 days 3 nights KL-Ipoh-Penang-Taiping-KL trip
This is the 3rd documented trip to North Malaysia, do check out other 2 posts below for more eating places:
3 days trip to Penang and Ipoh
First stop, dim sum in Foh San, above is yam cake
Other dim sum, notable is their porridge which is very nice and made with drumstick meat instead of chicken shreds
Second stop, we made a slight detour (in the direction of KL) to go to Tanjung Tualang for their famous steam fresh water prawn
Yew Kei, supposedly restaurant locals prefer among many other restaurant in the area selling the same famous steam prawns
tanks & tanks of prawns
I think the above is RM40 for 600gm, medium small size, find it is just so so, the taste a bit funny, maybe they should put more rice wine to cover the strong seafood smell…
Over the deepavali weekend…
Next stop, Kedai Makanana Tepi Sungai in Portweld/Kuala Sepetang
Big prawn in the restaurant ‘aquarium)
Squid tasted a bit fishy especially the roundish one with some soft guts inside, RM12
Very fresh prompret, yummy! RM14 for a small one
Steamed flower crab, RM18
Bill
Gee Seng in Bukit Tambun is still the best for seafood
Squid RM7 not as good as remembered, not bad nonetheless
Baked crab with roe, very fresh & yummy and only RM33!
Arriving our hotel in Penang – Paramount Hotel, only RM90 nett for twin-sharing room, situated next to the City while at the same time very near to City Centre, parking lot available. Just have to bear with that this is very old colonial style hotel with minimal amenities: no TV & fridge in room, simple toast and jam for breakfast upon request, WIFI is already in the room, but slow and keep on getting disconnected, only one electric socket for charging in the room
This hotel housed a famous restaurant called Ocean Green
Very old style colonial building, above is their side entrance.
Have to go up barefooted to keep the place clean and to preserve the wooden flooring and tiles
The wooden stairway way with child guard at the top
common hallway
with TV
Common dining room
hallway leading to room on both sides
Our room, very old, No TV, but nonetheless very clean
another view to door without safety lock but old keyhole style
Even the speed control for overhead fan is old
toilet
Breakfast in famous Bangkok Lane mee goreng, this Indian uncle speak perfect Penang style hokkien
Piping hot even though it is tapao, packed with dried squid etc, slightly sweet, i would prefer it to be more savoury
Second stop: Famous Ah Leng Char Kuey Tiaw in Khoon Hiang kopitiam. They closed on Thursdays and supposedly also days when they can’t source good prawns.
We waited around 40 minutes for this, the best CKT out of the 4 we had, they use duck egg which is creamy and added in the last stage of cooking, making it creamy and just cooked with soft texture. Yummy! must try
The above is their CKT special(with mantis prawn) + duck egg priced at RM11 Expensive but really nice
Hokkien mee (prawn mee) with Vits noodle in the same coffeeshop is ok
Apom Guan is must visit as well, we went there twice, so good every time. It is best to drop by and book the apom and come back an hour later due to long queue.
O kio, Mun-Tau-Long in Pengkalan Weld is ok, with lychee inside
O-Kio sold from a van
Kek Seng Assam laksa is my favourite, their soup is not too thick and very nice
Ice kacang with home-made durian ice cream is yummy
Yi Garden Coffeeshop located near Lorong Selamat sister CKT
Wanton with prawn+pork mince is quite nice
Venison pan mee is offputting, the strong smell of the venison is just not compatible
Siam Road CKT
Not bad, although not memorable
Bee Hooi coffeeshop in Pulau Tikus
O-chien (oyster omelette) still very good although seems like not many people order from the stall
Famous Old Green House Hokkien mee(prawn mee)
Ordered some dim sum while waiting for the hokkien mee stall to open, it is horrible, imagine prawn harkao with no visible prawn inside, but what look like pork mince
Old Green house’s Hokkien mee, forgettable, the one in Presgrave is so much better.
Sun Voon Kee chicken porridge
Very expensive, RM7 for a chicken fish porridge, we intended to order their steamed chicken, but they are sold out at 9pm? only leaving some chicken shreds for porridge. Forgettable!
De Tai Tong is a bustling shop at 9pm, we had their har kau and siew mai. They have dim sum being sold at night! A lot of other people order their tai chow noodle dish
Lam Khie in Selama, Perak
Wantan mee with their housemade noodle, it is not springy, RM3, forgettable
blanched vege, RM4
Braised terapin is forgettable, we wanted another soup style but was told it has to be pre-ordered due to long cooking hour, RM20, forgetable
Steamed frog, RM25 with strong herbal taste
Very fresh lompang fish, only RM15, this fish has lots of small bones
Our hotel in Taiping – Legend inn 2, only RM103 nett without breakfast. With nice flat screen TV, no fridge though. WIFI in the room is satisfactory fast.
toilet
toilet view to the hotel room door outside
Full of customers due to the holiday weekend and the other famous cendol place Ansari is not opened
Not bad, they ran out of pulut (glutinous rice), so we make do with red bean
Taiping Zoo
Taiping Zoo and Night Safari price list
Ticket counter is closed at 6pm-8pm
lining up to take the tram for night safari, in the end we opted to go on foot after long wait. Going on foot turn out a better option anyway, the tram went too fast.
tram
Taman Tasik food court, next to Lake Garden
Their Hong Kong cheong fun is piping hot and soft, but i don’t like their chee cheong fun sauce, would prefer to have soy sauce
boiled cockles which is too raw
oyster omelette is ok, different from penang style
Siang Malam food court just opposite of KFC, open only at evening time
Taiping style chee cheong fun, with red coloured sauce and few pieces of yam cake on top
Prawn nasi lemak, only RM1.20
Famous Simpang CKT
Not bad, but not memorable as well although they uses duck egg
Old uncle in action
Kakak Kuey Tiaw soup is nice for morning. Kakak Ping at the background, i think it is coffee mixed with barley, quite nice actually.
I love their stewed chicken feet
Funny mountain soy bean in Ipoh
RM0.90 each bowl, very smooth and nice, it is only half filled and very little, so we ordered 4 bowls to share
