Custard Cake

This is by far a recipe which looks most challenging and interesting, it is custard + cake = custard cake. Recipe taken from Home Cooking Rocks. Above is caramel set in bottom of pyrex bowl. Caramel made from boiling sugar and water till it become brownish.
Recipe calls from 6 eggs, but since mine are small, so i used 7 of them.
half a can of condense milk is used(1 cup condense milk = 250ml = 1/2 can), a pack of milk also used.
bottom of bowl is custard, top part is cake mixture, they won’t mix if cake mixture is done properly, meaning egg white are beat till stiff, therefore the cake mixture is actually quite airy and light, and will float on top.
before going into oven
baked bain-marie/water bath style, direct heat will cause the custard to become holey and not smooth.
done, the recipe specified baking time is 50 minutes to 1 hour, but i done it about 1 hour 20 mins as the custard are still not set. Anyway, should have taken it out slightly earlier because the cake mixture on top is a bit dry from the long baking time.
ta da, nice shiny custard cake, you will have to flip over the whole thing, so top of it is caramel/custard and bottom is cake. I ommitted lemon, so there is a strong egg smell, vanilla essence should have done the trick too, anyway, this taste quite like egg tart kinda custard.

Beautiful lamp decor on the ceiling
Ole Ole Trio: chicken, fish and squid
Squid Salad
Beef and lamb set, the mash potatoes look homey with its brownish color
fried squid and potatoes
squeezing lime juice, their lime juice is really nice, not that sweet, approx RM18 per jug and RM6 per glass, ordering a jug is more worth it.
Overall, a hearty meal although not much to my taste maybe as the food are quite oily 😛

Camera Survey Among Food Bloggers

Thank you for all who responded to my mail on what camera they are using for their FOOD blog… haha, i am considering to get a new camera albeit not in a rush to get it. Based on 163 who responded. 163! i had gone through the list roughly and below are few camera which i consider to buy, firstly i filtered out food blogs of photos which i like, from there, crossing out all the camera which is more than 500g, seriously even 300g is quite heavy, my current Optio weight only 98g.

In no particular order:
1. Phnomenon: food in Cambodia, using Olympus C-740UZ(weight 295g, ISO up to 400)
2. A Southern Grace, using Olympus Stylus 830(weight 125g, ISO up to1600)
3. Farmgirl Fare, using Canon Powershot A630(weight 235g, ISO up to 800)
4. Flour Arrangement, using Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K(weight 372g, ISO up to 5400)
5. Sounding My Barbaric Gulp, using Canon PowerShot A620(weight 285g, ISO up to 400)
A lot of the local Malaysia food blog do take good photos too, but almost all of these use DSLR which is too heavy for me to carry around.
Some advices given by food bloggers: get camera with higher ISO(to take good food photos for reason unknown to me), tripod, cardboard to reflect light, don’t use flash(didn’t know that, no wonder my photo looks so harsh and washed out)
Many of them recommend Panasonic Lumix which is more expensive, and more than 50% are using Canon. But i felt like i am leaning more towards Olympus Stylus 830, which is small and the photos do look quite DSLR, excuse me a newbie in photography, but the photo in A Southern Grace does looks like it has depth, not a flat picture.
Do leave your comments here, quite interesting to discuss camera choices among food bloggers… haha

Customers fill this place to the brim on Saturdays and Sunday morning. This stall is in Taman Rainbow, while you are on Jalan Ipoh, turn into Taman Rainbow, drive straight, it should be on your left a while down the road.
Mushrooms: shitake mushroom, canned and inoki mushroom.
one person’s portion
yummy soup.
Worth a try, the soup used to be quite sweet years ago, but since then it has improved much.
