Sugimoto Japanese Restaurant, Desa Sri Hartamas

Posted by vivien | Kuala Lumpur and Selangor | Thursday 2 October 2008 11:24 am

Excited to eat here as i have heard good reviews of this restaurant, both on the web and from friend. Sugimoto is located above Jarrod and Rawlins(a deli) and same row as BBQ chicken(Korean franchise of Fried chicken)
Here is hallway leading towards Sugimoto.
Kamameshi (iron pot rice)
Upon reading this website, http://food-4-thot.blogspot.com/2007/06/sugimotodesa-sri-hartamas-kl.html, i want to try the steamed rice. It sounded like some cool idea whereby you have to let the rice sit for 15 minutes, then only you eat it.
Some offering: special roll.: Salmonzzz.com (RM55) , spider roll (RM20)…
Marinated fish guts, taste quite salty, not repulsive as it may sound, it is ok. The whitish stuff underneath is daikon.
Thickly sliced Sashimi, yummm
My order of Kamameshi set (RM35, reasonably cheap eh), comes with salad, braised beef, chawan mushi, miso soup and fresh fruit. Ok, my 15 minutes wait start now, which some “marinating” action starts in the pot. The waitress put 3 dessert plates on top of the iron pot, which i find odd, why need such weight, it is not like it will fly off… Anyway, the wait begins…
Sashimi for 2 pax, RM85, yummmm yummm, they are fresh, no weird discoloration, and so thickly sliced.

Saikoro / Inaniwa (Hot) set (RM36) which essentially is hot udon and rice (topped with cubed sashimi…) If you want carb, here you can have it all, noodle + rice. The “big egg thingy”(what it called?) taste good, i had some in other japanese restaurant which has really fishy smell (not mistaken it is at Shogun 1 Utama), and since them have dislike towards it, but these are some tasty salty fresh eggs.
Health set RM40, no idea why it is called healthy as they is tempura in it.
Volcano RM18, these are so orgasmicly good, ok i may be exagerating, but with the warm-white-fish-mayo mixture + maki below………… the fish-mayo mixture is wiped clean.
So this is my steamed rice with 3 plates on top of it.
Ready to be eaten, after ~ 20 minutes, when you see steam starts coming out. Topping is mix of chicken, scallop and vege.
So this is how the iron pot looks like deconstructed, cool eh? They use some kind of kerosine to cook the rice, assumingly raw rice for 15 minutes.
sorbet made from japanese lemon, so refreshing and good.
Receipt: RM380 for 6 person. Average out to be RM65 per person, I would say it is great value considering it is a satisfying japanese meal. There are japanese dining in it which is a good sign. Lighting is dim, taking photos with flash is a must if you are taking any, fortunately i don’t have stares from diners or servers there. Highly recomended.
